Regulation
I didn't really listen to music in my early youth and it's now difficult to recall the cause for this. Part of the reason was because I didn't know what to like and I was overwhelmed by the volume of available music. With the advent of Napster and other programs (remember audiogalaxy?) I started to sample different genres. I lie. I just listened to hip hop in the early days although I eventually figured out what I enjoyed from other genres. The apex of my musical listening came in 2005 as I discovered a number of albums that would become personal favorites. I don't think I'll ever discover more great albums in a single calender year than I did in 2005.By mid 2006, I started to get back into MMA which led to a major change in listening habits. I started listening to mma podcasts and as podcasts became more popular, I started listening to podcasts from other genres. Whether it was because of the energy required to discover the gems hidden amongst the commercialize garbage, becoming jaded or other reasons, listening to new music became an arduous task. So the majority of my listening time was devoted to podcasts and if I listened to music, it was often old music.
With age, I feel more pessimistic and cynical, so I need something to combat this. I realize now that more than any other pastime, music helps regulate my mood and it really served me well during the tough early days of UBC. For my sake, I'll need to make a more concerted effort in listening to music.
