*edit* Remote fun

So when it comes to technology, my mom is a complete klutz; she just can't wrap her mind around simple concepts. For example, we have shaw digital at home. To watch tv, you'd have to turn on the tv and then the cable box. However, there's the tv remote and shaw cable box remote. The tv remote can only control the tv and the shaw remote can control both the tv and cable remote (There are buttons on the remote that switch you from tv to cable box controls). For some odd reason, if you turn off the cable box, both the tv and cable box turn off. Ok, this sorta makes sense, but personally, I find it only creates confusion (hey, when I lived with my aunt, I was confused as hell at first). I personally prefer bell express vu's system (the tv and cable box controls are completely separated).

The main things that confuse my mom:

- The tv has to be on channel 3 in order to watch what's on the cable box (otherwise you get "tv snow").

- With the shaw remote, if a control is selected, you will be unable to manipulate the controls of the other unit. Therefore, if you have selected TV control, you can’t make cable box changes. Unfortunately, there’s no on-screen prompt telling you when you have switched, so usually my mom accidentally changes to tv channel XX instead of cable box channel XX. Then my mom starts button mashing because she can’t manipulate the cable box controls (she’s stuck on tv controls).

Then when I show my mom how to do it, she usually complains that I go too fast (which usually leads to my mom disowning me for a couple of hours).

But here’s the main problem: my mom looks for the magical button that will solve all of her problems rather than analyzing the situation and acting accordingly. For example, to select a particular chapter from a DVD, you use the arrow keys to select the chapters link and then after hitting the selection button on the remote, you select the chapter with the arrows keys and selection button. My mom will just mash OK like a newbie without looking up at the screen. And when I show my mom how to do it, she gets hung on a certain key and begins mashing that button afterwards.

To add insult to injury, my mom has no thumb, finger and eye coordination.

Ok, my mom is sorta learning to read both the remote and tv screen, but it’s definitely a work in progress. Did I ever mention that I think my mom would bomb an IQ test?

Random thoughts

- Geez, I don't really watch pro wrestling anymore, but I feel compelled to say something.

Including Wrestlemania 22, Triple H has been in the main event for 5 consecutive years. At least, Triple H jobbed the last two wrestlemanias. This just goes to show you that fucking the bosses' daughter definitely has its upside.

- Just finished Devil May Cry on normal mode. Even for a videogame, the plot is hopelessly asinine. Good game though. I think I'll start playing Baldur's Gate: Throne of Bhaal mixed in with some Devil May Cry (I will attempt to finish hard mode now)

Ultimate

Unfortunately my ultimate games this past weekend were all defaults. One team didn't have enough people and another didn't have enough girls. But we still scrimmaged anyways.

Notable plays

1) For the first game, me and Byron played for the other team to make the sides even. The other team was pulling and Byron was the first to the disc, except he faked picking up the disc. This fake froze Allen (who was covering Byron) momentarily which gave Bryon a half step on him. Angus then picked up the disc then made a perfect pass to Byron for the score.

1 pass. 1 score

2) I was with my check in our endzone. I couldn't do a shoulder check to see if the opposing disc handler still had the disc because I would've lost my check resulting in a score for them. I decided to face guard my check, so I had to read his eyes. Eventually, his eyes kind of light up and he cut to my right. I followed him and at the last second, out of the corner of my eye, the disc was coming in low towards my check. I managed to reach over and knock it down with my right hand.

yay me

3) We had the disc near their endzone. I somehow lost my check and snuck into the back of the endzone with their best player was between me and the disc handler. The handler sees me and sends a pass to my right except that opposing player, in front of me, made a full out dive to knock the disc down. (He could only reach it with one hand. That's far he had to stretch out to knock it down).

Midnight cravings

Just now, I was laying in bed just now thinking about my non-existant six pack.

So how did I remedy this situation?

I got up and had a cup of coffee. Then half of a large bag of nachos with con queso and sour cream with a glass of milk. Then a bowl of congee with those greasy donut things. Then half a pint of water. Then another half pint of water mixed with honey (for my sore throat).

My parents actually think I've turned into Calista Flockhart/Nicole Richie/Blonde Lindsay Lohan/(insert celebrity waif)

Richards on Richards Feb 25

Who: Nada Surf and Rogue Wave
Where:
Richards on Richards
When: Feb 25, 2006 (Saturday)
How much: ~$18

I came in 10 minutes before Nada Surf’s set. Yeah, that’s right. I totally skipped Rogue Wave’s set. I usually don’t like new music on the very first listen especially when it comes to live music. And I was at the gym and I needed time to go home, eat and shower before leaving for the show.

I didn’t really keep track of the set list because a) I sort of didn’t care b) I’ve only been listening to Nada Surf for a month and a bit so I wouldn’t recognize every song c) I went to party right afterwards and didn’t have a chance to write anything down.

Stuff I recognized

Fruit fly
The way you wear your head
Inside of love
Killian’s red
Happy kid
Concrete bed
Do it again
Always love
What is your secret
Blankest year
Blizzard of ‘77
Hi-speed soul

Some song off Proximity effect
Some cover song
And probably one or two more songs

Overall I’m kind of disappointed. I’m somewhat disappointed that they didn’t play “If you leave” or “Popular”. I know a handful of people in the audience were disappointed that the latter was not played, despite some of the pleas from the crowd. I sort of understand the reasoning behind this: Nada does indie rock now and post-grunge would fly well with the crowd. But I’m still disappointed.

/ Sidetracking

For the record, I like indie music. For the record, I think most indie music fans are sissies. I don’t understand why some “indie” people hate on music for being on label X or being too mainstream or whatever. If it sounds good and the artist(s)/music doesn’t oppose your personal beliefs, then that’s all that matters. Frankly, these “indie” people are just as bad as people who don’t listen to anything outside of top 40 radio

On another blog someone mentioned “the full-house anthematic sing-a-long first verse for 'Always Love' ". What the hell? There was no full house anthematic sing-a-long. Probably just localized entirely within your small group. At best. Maybe. I’ve heard anthematic sing-a-longs (U2, Arcade Fire, Coldplay) and this definitely was not one of them.

The band sounded good, but they really seemed to be in hurry to get out of town. Aside from maybe one song, there were no extended jams for any songs. There was minimal interaction with the crowd and they mostly just stood around on stage (which would be understandable if they played at 200 mph/hr like a metal band). They played for about a hour, but it was one *quick* hour. Not to mention, most of the crowd might as well been dead (see above note about sissies) Geez, you could at least clap during a song. At least one guy in front of me (I think he was drunk) had the right idea.

Maybe I’ve been spoiled rotten by my previous shows.

Side notes:

- I think if Slayer came to town, I would brave one of their shows although I’d be at the back of the crowd because a) I don’t want to go to the front and get trampled and b) I doubt anyone else would go with me, so there would be no one to help me if shit hit the fan. On that note, I hit myself for not going to see Opeth when they played at the Commodore back in October (although at the time, I was only starting to listen to “Blackwater Park” aka the only Opeth album I’ve listened to. It’s an album that I enjoy more with further listening).

- I wish people would go with me to shows. I would get completely hammered for not only your amusement but for my own amusement.

- Dilated Peoples played at the Commodore on Monday, but I didn’t go. I downloaded a couple of their albums and frankly I’m not very impressive, hence why I didn’t go.
